At Ease

Naturally speaking, is there anything more taxing on the body than pregnancy and childbirth? Probably not—the process packs a pretty hefty physical and emotional punch. “I compare pregnancy and childbirth to running a marathon,” says Christy Schachte, licensed massage therapist and owner of Mt. Pleasant-based MoM Spa.
“You’ve built the body up for nine or 10 months, then it’s tested with a pretty traumatic event—you can’t just get up the next day and go back to business as usual. You have to take care of it afterwards, help the muscles mend.”
Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital has recently partnered with Schachte and her team to treat new moms to a free, 30-minute post-partum massage in the days after delivering at Mount Pleasant Hospital. “The goal is to get the body back in balance as quickly as possible,” Schachte notes.
“The really beneficial thing about massage is that it provides instant physical relief. This is critical for women whose low backs tend to be sore, or who are suffering from sciatica or swelling in the hands and feet.”
Though there are any number of varieties of massage, Schachte treats Mount Pleasant Hospital moms to a medium/medium-deep tissue massage accompanied by hot basalt river stones placed on the back, neck, and shoulders, then onto the hands and feet. This helps relax the body, lower blood pressure, loosen trigger points, work out the lactic acid, and even stabilize emotions.
“I like to see post-partum moms three to 10 days after childbirth. This is when hormones tend to crash and it’s important for these moms to get out of the house, focus on their bodies, and get well.”
“We have to take care of the mother first,” adds Schachte. “The sooner her body and mind are back in balance, the sooner she can take care of her baby. And a healthy family is the goal.”
